Notes on Project Eternity

I’ve been following Project Eternity since it started 25 days ago.

I doubt you are reading it here for the first time, but I’ll tell you anyway. Project Eternity is a Kickstarter for a roleplaying game true to the old cRPGS that bred household names like Black Isle, BioWare, Obsidian, Fallout, Planescape: Torment and Baldur’s Gate.

Project Eternity is a very ambitious project, asking for 1.1 million dollars, however it reached its goal in 24 hours, which means a lot of players out there have been waiting for something like this for a long time.

It disproves the notion that top down / isometric roleplaying games should be left for Runic or Blizzard to do (their games aren’t really RPGs to me, though).

After a ten day countdown to a mysterious Project X, Obsidian unveiled the Kickstarter with a gorgeous video featuring music by Justin Bell, an Obsidian employee.

In the video Feargus Urqhart, Tim Cain, Chris Avellone, Josh Sawyer and Adam Brennecke detailed what Eternity was.

The video is really well made. I appreciated little details like Urqhart having a concept art of a genasi from Mask of the Betrayer behind him, Tim Cain with a “Build Mass with SASS” poster from Fallout New Vegas and Avellone with KOTOR 2 artwork in the office.

They are up to their 20th update today, announcing their last two stretch goals: 3 million dollars to get a Stronghold, and 3.5 for another BIG CITY. It is a tall order, as they are currently at about 2.7 million, but it would be fantastic to reach 3.5.

Eternity’s first screenshot was unveiled today and it surpasses the beauty of the old Infinity Engine games.

The day before the Kickstarter began I mused that their mystery project HAD to be the spiritual Torment sequel. I wasn’t entirely wrong though, as Eternity will feature souls, with the chance for characters to remember past memories, much like Torment.

I already upped my pledge twice, as the rewards are really enticing and its one of the last opportunities to get this much goodies with a game, unless everybody starts doing cloth maps.

In the excitement of this enterprise, Obsidian designers and developers gave interviews left and right, videos are made with every other KS update, and even Josh Sawyer SANG for the Kickstarter backers.

It is poignant to note that Josh Sawyer has presided over three cancelled games: Baldur’s Gate 3, Fallout 3 and Aliens: Crucible, the xenomorph RPG that never was.
I can only imagine his joy in designing a game that bends to no one else other than the backers and the players.

The community rallied to aid Obsidian in their quest. YouTube user armandmirpour, a veritable Chanter and Bard, started recording videos of himself playing guitar and singing songs he wrote, all in relation to Project Eternity.

Obsidian noted armandmirpour’s talent and who knows, maybe his tunes could show up in the game?

RPGCodex and GameBanshee started their own chip in campaigns to get one of the 10K rewards, with Codex almost reaching the goal.

Among the Obsidian forums the Obsidian Order of Eternity was formed. To join the Order, a backer adds 8 dollars to their pledge amount on the KS and picks a unique title. I’m Dragonblade of the Obsidian Order!
Go here for more info.
The idea is to support Obsidian for the good of the game itself. The Order counts almost 400 members already.

There are still 5 days to go, so please go to the Kickstarter page and pledge for Project Eternity. Go to Facebook and LIKE Obsidian Entertainment to get us another level on the Megadungeon of Od Nua, the special dungeon that increases in number of levels according to number of backers.

Let’s get to those stretch goals!
